Join me in learning the beautiful, classical, forms of Italic script! Cancelleresca, or Chancery hand, came about from a marriage of humanist and Roman forms and really hit its stride during the period we know as the Italian Renaissance.
These scripts were so popular in their multitude of variations that they quickly became adopted by both the church and became adopted throughout the old world as a standard. This widespread use lead the slanted, broad pen, script to such renown that, even today, we still call many small broad nibs
"italic".
Classically beautiful, flowing, very nearly ideal in readability and highly refined through the ages it's no wonder that Italic is still considered by a large number of calligraphers and typographers to be a "perfect script".
In this course we will focus on the history, forms, and execution of creating classic (and perhaps a few contemporary) Italic hands. The course includes all materials and handouts. If you wish to bring your own tools feel frew. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own ruler and mechanical pencil if possible.
Hope to see you there!

Title: The Analog Line: A Journey Through Pen & Ink, Vintage Flex, and Creative Practice
Description: A hands‑on session focused on nurturing the creative process through simple mark‑making and the core fundamentals of art as they relate to pen‑and‑ink rendering. I also spend a substantial portion of the class on the history behind the tools — both the golden age of illustration and the early development of fountain pens — and why this heritage is worth preserving and keeping alive. Using vintage pens from the 1920s and earlier, I go over filling systems, basic maintenance, practicality, and the patient, respectful approach needed when working with early pens. The session is designed to be helpful for complete beginners as well as experienced artists, with an emphasis on rhythm, confidence, and expressive line work.
Duration: 90 minutes Preferred Day/Time: Flexible Fee: $60 (includes a signed copy of my latest book) Materials: I provide all materials — paper, ink, and vintage pens for hands‑on demonstration. Attendee Limit: 20 Skill Level: Beginners and up Printed Syllabus: A printed syllabus outlining the full session structure will be provided to all attendees during the class.

About:
Scott B. Jones – Illustrator & Author Scott B. Jones continues his thirteen year journey as a pen and ink artist using vintage fountain pens to consistently create daily drawings. A distinctive feature of Scott’s work is his use of flexible nib early 20th century fountain pens. These antique tools offer a diverse range of line variations and textures, which emphasize the handcrafted quality of his drawings. His new book, Vintage Fountain Pen Therapy, documents his daily artworks from 2024. Scott’s art is a fascinating blend of influences. From the fluid lines of early 20th-century rubber-hose animation to the organic compositions of Art Nouveau to the raw, vibrant energy of street art, his work is a convergence of creative approaches. The intricate cross hatching patterns of 19th century printmaking, the nonsense of Absurdism and the biting wit of existential humor all find a place in his drawings. Scott views art as a conversation, not a competition; an egalitarian opportunity to explore new ideas, One of his main goals is to encourage others to find the joy of drawing with vintage fountain pens and to reconnect with oneself. He invites you to join him on this journey.

Come learn the beautiful calligraphic style of copperplate script!
Copperplate calligraphy, also known as roundhand, engrosser's, and engraver's script, is considered by most to be the mother of all pointed pen hands. It still stands as one of the most recognizable and highly demanded design elements in pointed pen calligraphic works.
In this course we will go over a concise version of its history and learn to use dip pens in order to form the basic strokes of its construction.
This course is geared towards beginners but those with more experience may attend it as a refresher course and I do my best to teach to the level of each individual in the second half of the course (plus it's always nice to have experienced attendees help).
The course is $70 for the 3 hours and includes all the tools (nibs, holders, papers, handouts). Attendees are welcome to bring their own supplies for use if they wish. I also encourage attendees to bring a pencil and ruler with them.
